Artie Bops!

from Glyde Drexler by Sankofa

/

about

The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, in raising our oldest son. His name is Arthur, but his younger brother was unable to say either his name or the word STOP! When Arthur would get on his brother's nerves, Walter would yell out Artie, BOPS!

lyrics

The knock knock jokes that go nowhere, the loose teeth
The tangles in his hair, the dude with brutal truth speak
The resentment of a younger brother taking his shine
Obscuring the amazingly deep soul it can hide
Playing our piano is his therapy of sorts
Working on snippets of songs with such beautiful force
I mean, if only other kids could see how amazing he is
Intensity comes at the cost of a burning bridge
I can’t live for him, try to take his pain away
Misunderstood just like his old man, the rainy days
Will come and go and I hope that they don’t drown him
And if the water gets high, may he quickly learn to swim
No cannonball before diving without his life preserver
I dove in soon as his head had submerged
May consequences someday teach a lesson that sticks
I hope he knows that I love him in spite of all of tiffs

It goes choice/choice, choice/consequence and now I’m barking at him
Sent to the base of the stairs with an alarmist magic
The ramping up leads to a trip to his room
The one passenger ticket and I’m not seeing him soon
The red around my eyes needs to fade before we speak again
Then we’ll talk it out, free of a fever’s heated blend
Otherwise stuff that I don’t want to happen might
And I don’t want a son who sees me and reacts in fright
His appetite is the same as mine, hollow legs and all
We may as well have been born the same date and time
It breaks my heart when he reaches in to hold my hand
So I try to hold on just as much as I can
Being amidst a storm makes it hard to appreciate the waves
A life raft shuttled in the busiest of days
He’s so smart and so blunt and so innocent
And so good at pushing every button that I’m living with

You know how many people beyond your family love you?
And sometimes even as an adult life it can suck, dude
You are driven and intelligent, passionate and eloquent
With a lawyerly knack for taking language on a hellish spin
You and Walter remind me of me and your uncle Matt
A battlefield under which I hope you tunnel back
He idolizes you in ways you take as murderous
Proof that so much of life is how you will interpret it
You don’t wear your heart on your sleeve
Man, your heart is your arm and it’s starting to bleed
May time thicken your skin but not make you numb
Then again, a little bit of skin is better than none
The same freckles you hate serve to make you beautiful
The day you were born I wanted to share you with the world
And I’m so proud of you and and what you’ll become
Even if I’m not around to see what you have done
